Week 6

Lab Information and Procedure

Week 6 we wanted to drop down to three layers.  The first layer consisted of a full sheet of paper. In the middle of the first layer we placed 5 strips of paper in a “fish bone” type style in an attempt to create more surface area resulting in an increase in weight it can hold. The second layer consisted of a full sheet of paper but, the bottom half of the paper was cut into strips again in an attempt to create more surface area and hold more weight. Like the first layer, we also added the “fish bone” type style in the middle of the layer.  The third layer was identical to the second one. Each layer was 3.66 inches thick. When the wall was removed, this wall fell instantly.

Since the three layer design did not work, we wanted to try a four layer design. Each layer are spaced at 2.75 inches thick. Each of the four layers had 14 strips cut into the lower half of it. In the middle of the two middle layers, we placed the “fish bone” type style of reinforcements. When this design was tested, there was no failure weight. The wall was loaded with 350 lbs and did not collapse.
